Where we came from, and who we are.
Through a vision and passion for people, Pastor Duane Sheriff began building up Hands of Hope food bank twenty five years ago. Starting in a small double-wide trailer, we were established in August of 1988 with the original name of Victory Life Food Bank. That first year, we fed 490 families.
In 2002, a fire destroyed a department of the food bank’s parent ministry Victory Life Church, and was faced with relocation. Although a new facility was not yet available, the staff’s love for people prevailed over circumstances and conditions; the food bank remained open by operating under trees on the church property. For eight weeks, during the hottest months of the year, the volunteers continued to minister and hand out food to help those that desperately needed it, regardless of the difficulty. Later that year, the food bank moved to where it is today, on Main St. in downtown Durant, OK.
In the spring of 2006, the food bank facility became Hands of Hope Outreach Center and expanded to encompass the growing vision of the eldership and church, which was to meet more needs in the community and to offer support and prayer to every person who walked through our doors. We will hold their hands and touch all that the world would consider unlovely or unclean because it is how Jesus Christ would have done it. We are called to be the reflection of Christ Himself in this earth, and instill the hope and love that can only come from Him.
